A little heavy lifting...

Postby beaky » Sun Nov 13, 2005 11:05 am

So I'm in the kitchen this morning making coffee, and I begin to hear the unmistakable sound of a hovering chopper. Usually it's a police heli, somebody holding for a landing clearance at KEWR, or a practice flight. But it wasn't overhead- it was almost a mile north, over a downtown skyscraper. I ran like a bunny to fetch my camera, and managed to get a few snaps:

Sikorsky S61, if I'm not mistaken... not as impressive as a Skycrane, but this was fun to watch. They were installing a new flagpole(or antenna, or both). They've just now got it seated after about a minute of wobbling around; now the loop is slipped down (probably another line hanging down for this purpose) and the ground crew detches it.

The line is free, and the pilot begins to turn away.

I think Carson is the same outfit that operates the Skycrane I once saw working in Jesrey City years ago... looks like a fun job!

Hm, I like the original Seaking, but the S-61 series (including this one) is simply ugly.

Impressive pics nonetheless. :)

Great shots.

The only ugly thing about a helo is that yellow color. ;)

Nice catch.  The "Hey look at that" and having a camera near by are the best.  That's why I always have my camera with me.
Great shots!! :)

Good thing I keep the camera on its dock at home, at least... ready to go.
My friend and neighbor was looking out the window; I went to see and said "There's a helicopter hovering..."
He said, "yeah, it's right there"- he'd been watching for several minutes- probably saw the pole being lifted up and all that, and said nothing until I mentioned it.

Yeah, it looks a little embarassed without the flotation stuff, etc., and it's a very ugly yellow, but I think of it as a flying crane- no need to be any prettier than a bulldozer, even if it does fly (or whatever it is that helicopters actually do. ;)  )
That sickly yellow is actually very high-vis:the pilot has enough to do without worrying about sitting there like a big fat midar-magnet...

I agree... The Westland Sea King is a classy looking 'chopper'.

Does anyone know which one sounds better though; the Rolls-Royce Bristol Gnome powered Westland version or the original General Electric T58-GE-10 powered Sikorsky???

I know the British Westland version was a more capable airframe...

Anything made by Kamov is ugly! I wouldn't say the Fairey Rotodyne was a looker either :P
