Sussex by the sea
Posted: Sun Nov 06, 2005 6:36 amContinuing my brief tour of my home county. I've lived in Sussex all my life & this area is noted for its mild climate. This is mainly due to being situated between the South Downs & the sea & the weather is very often completely different just a short distance north on the other side of the Downs. This phenomenon completely fools the weather forecasters who never seem to get it right.
Littlehampton (we've heard all the jokes) is where the river Arun meets the sea & it has a nice natural harbour. It's a traditional seaside town & popular with holidaymakers & day trippers. People actually pay to come here for their holidays so I consider myself very lucky to live in this part of the world. For a change I went to the West Beach on the opposite side of the river to the town to get some shots from a different angle.
The waterfront has been completely renovated over the last few years & although it met with some local opposition I think it's a great improvement. Lots of colour instead of the old run down buildings & warehouses.
The harbour entrance is usually packed with boats of all types coming & going on the tide. Being a weekday there wasn't much activity & this was the only boat returning to harbour while I was there. Unfortunately the weather wasn't so good yesterday (Saturday) or I would have gone back for some better shots.
The sea was still a tad rough & there was a fair wind blowing after the recent storms which makes it ideal for the intrepid surfers. Calififornia it ain't but you make the best of what you have. Believe it or not there's a surfer in there somewhere.
Good old Sussex by the sea. There's even a song about it although not all of Sussex is anywhere near the sea. I'll sing the verse & you can join in the chorus.
