For centuries Man dreamed of being able to fly, free like the birds. In the early 20th Century he finally achieved it. I often have problems explaining my life-long fascination with anything that flies & the grace & beauty I see in it. Also my passion for vintage aeroplanes. Perhaps these photos taken yesterday at Old Warden can explain it better than any words.

The dream becomes reality.

Amazing the jump they made from those machines to planes like the Spitfire in only 30 years. Nice photos Doug:)

It is astonishing Craig. Unfortunately it would have taken much longer without two terrible World Wars. Such is the price of progress.

I remember reading that book many years ago. Some parts reduced me to hysterics (or should that be hysteria? ) & I found it far more amusing than the film. Mention of the sewage farm always started me giggling for some strange reason.

I don't remember which came first, the book or the film.

If Woodie's book was a first edition, it would suggest the film came first...

It is a book of the film. And fantastic. The bit at the beginning, "Pegasus and all those" or how men learnt to fly is absolutely brilliant with such gems as "It's a little recognised fact that the widespread persecution of witches throughout the 14th and 15th centuries was in fact the first recognition of women as aviators."


I only got it out because Hagars first line coincides with the first line of the book. "Men have always dreamed that they could fly."
