Peek behind the scenes 4

These are the last for now. Not behind the scenes but taken during the display.

The Avro Triplane & Bristol Boxkite replicas before the weather clamped in. More of these later.


Meanwhile, a rare sight anywhere but Old Warden & the wonderful sound of 1 Rolls-Royce Kestrel + 2 Merlins.






The Spitfire closed the show. After a short interval something's stirring at the other end of the field. Chocks away chaps. Up, up & away into the gloom.




Showing the flag. Jolly good show chaps. Hip, Hip, Hooray. It's really getting murky now. Wonderful stuff.




I headed for the car as the Blackburn Monoplane was taking off. It was 7.00 pm & rapidly getting dark. As I was leaving I couldn't help thinking that all those aeroplanes had to be put back where they came from & this time in complete darkness. I doubt those volunteers left the airfield much before midnight.

I took a lot more static shots throughout the day. I might post these later, maybe in the Specific Aircraft Types forum.

Now what can be said, that already hasn't ?.......damn fine idea to keep the wood, wire and canvas stuff going for the younger generations to see where the 747's and Concordes came from...........

Dang... what a show they put on there!
Y'know, if I do make it to the UK next year, it'll be mostly because of your generous picture-posting, Doug- I've seen articles, etc. about OW and other such places, but these pictures really bring that scene to life for me.

Indeed Doug. If I lived closer I would be one of them, even if it was just cleaning the aeroplanes. I could probably remember how to swing a prop if necessary although I haven't done that for over 40 years. Not practical I'm afraid as a round trip would take something like 5 hours & cost me

Thanks Roger although I'm the first to admit that the ones in this thread are not the greatest photos I've ever taken.

You really should try OW some time. It's only about 30 minutes away from Duxford by road. I know that as I've done it myself. To be honest I much prefer the relaxed atmosphere of Old Warden, with the added benefit of an ideal location for photography. It's not a fair comparison as they complement each other & we're lucky to have them both.

[Cough]Its a bit harsh on the Hurri to say of "evolution" between it and the Spit. They were just two different (both exceedingly talented) designers solutions to the same specification. There was less than a year (in fact I think it was 6 months to the day) between their respective first flights...[/quote]

With the Hind to the Hurri though you're entirely correct. Shame they never did anything useful with the Hawker Henley...
