Caught in the D-day crossfire

Right on the frontlines we were for the D-day Re-enactment in Conneaut Ohio this past weekend.

While there were many shots I'll just post a few for now...




Of course what post here would be complete without an airplane shot? They had a Stinson L-5 along with a Yak, and a P-51D.....Unfortunately the P-51 was a 3/4 scale model and the lawn mower engine  (Sounded like it anyways) they had fitted on the front of the airplane didn't do it justice....


Yes all photos are originally in color, I just thought that some of them looked better in black and white considering the period the re-enactors were really aiming for..

I like re-enactments... they have a Civil War re-enactment around these parts every october, it's the same thing every year, but it never gets old. great shots Jared.

Yeah, I know they do it every year on the same weekend, I believe it started out because that was the weekend the city was able to guarantee them the access they needed to the park for the re-enactment. I think if they tried it earlier in the year they may have had more trouble from the local beach-goers..

Nope, it was a woman, she did a better job in acting than some of the other medics and fortunately unless she was standing right in front of you, a guy couldn't tell the difference between her and her male counterparts in all of their get-up..

I think if they tried it earlier in the year they may have had more trouble from the local beach-goers..

I'm sure if they just turned up in full kit like in the pictures, then the local 'beach-goers' would soon make some room for them  ;D

Fantastic. The B&W treatment really works.
As for female medics on the beach on D-Day: I'd bet that had they been allowed, many military nurses would have been willing, if scared... just like the guys who went. But that was definitely one situation that demanded extreme combat skills and endurance, even from medics- not many women would've been up to it.
I'm not a huge re-enactment fan, but I'm curious: any explosions, or was it just (blank) gunfire? And no landing craft, I guess. Pretty cool that they added some aircraft- what a strange experience for the pilots, flying over that mock battle...

lol, Rotty there was 3 different landing crafts.. Just kind of hard to get a good picture of them from where we were standing.

There was blanks being fired throughout the whole battle, explosives planted here and there, as well as the cannon being fired quite frequently..

As stated there was explosives, albeit not quite as much as in previous years such as when they were filming the scene for a WWII documentary on PBS..

The nearest we have to that is the Dad's Army crowd who regularly turn out at all the local air displays & suchlike. They are really very good & even look like the characters in the TV series. Not quite the same but it helps add to the atmosphere.
