Foster Wickner Wicko

Postby Hagar » Thu Sep 22, 2005 4:23 pm

I was very lucky to see this very rare aeroplane last Sunday, let alone get close up & see it in the air. I thought it was worth a topic of its own so here's the only example of a Foster Wickner Wicko in the world.

Well that's that - or so I thought.

While I was busy chatting (as usual ::)) he did a quick circuit & a fly-by. Darn it. Missed a golden oppportunity there. >:( Wait, what's this? He's coming round again. Quick switch the camera on. Blast that warm-up delay, no time to adjust zoom or focus - just hit the button & hope for the best. Ah, well. better than nothing I suppose. :-/
Image

Hang on, he's only doing another one. :o Careful now, don't mess it up this time. Whew! Not perfect but much better than I hoped for. 8)

All part of the agonies Hagar goes through to bring you these photos. It wouldn't be half the fun if it was easy. ;)

History & details of the restoration here. http://www.g-gyav.org.uk/pictures_7.htm

While it's sad there's only one left, it makes for real magic. That first not-quite-right inflight shot is like a picture of Nessie or something.
A real beauty, too... what a great replica project that would make!!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It was a treat & an unexpected privilege to see that beautifully restored aeroplane back in the air where it belongs. This made the trip to Popham worth it for that alone. I got stuck in a traffic jam on the way there & after sitting there without moving for 30 minutes I almost gave it up as a bad job.

I've had more responses to this topic than usual in a very short space of time & had no idea it would be so popular. It might be worth doing similar features on other rare types now & again, when the opportunity crops up. ;)
