Spitfires

And finally the Duxford Spitfires. Although eleven lined up on the grass, the two MkVs did not taxi so here are the nine that did.

There were far more Hurricanes than Spitfires during the Battle of Britain, but as can bee seen from these shots, the Spitfire evolved from the early eight machine gun aircraft in the second shot, that flew in the summer of 1940, to the bigger, heavier and almost twice as powerful cannon and heavy machine gun armed aircraft in the last shot. Although the Hurricane saw service right up until the end of the war with Far East squadrons, these aircraft were very much the same as those from the summer of 1940.
The Spitfire remained in production and in the front lines of Fighter Command from before the war right up to the end and beyond. No other allied type can make that claim.

Nice to see them all together. Any idea why the Mk Vs didn't taxy? It would be interesting to compare the different marks. There's an old story that the later Griffon-engined Spits could be compared to a Mk I carrying 32 passengers & their baggage. :o I don't if there's any truth in that.

I've no idea and ARCs MkV was missing from the flightline altogether although I think it was there on Saturday. Probably getting it ready for the trip to Malta.

Wow. Very nice.8)
A gaggle of Spits... not likely to see that here. We have to settle for mobs of Mustangs (like that's "settling"!)

I have poor shots of the MKv's taxiing before the formation (at least I think it was the MKV's, I think I'm so bloody clever with my 7 yr old son but I don't want to show myself up in public).  :-[

I also have a pic of the Merlins Over Malta spit. It was attracting a lot of interest bu didn't taxi or join in the formation.

If you all promise not to groan too much I'll do one final post  ::)
