Yes indeed. Even New Yorkers forget that not only is much of NY State hilly or mountainous, it's largely wilderness. Adirondack State Park (which begins about an hour's drive NW of, say, Old Rhinebeck), an area set aside "forever" to be undeveloped, is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Great Smoky Mtns., Grand Canyon, and the Everglades state parks combined... 6 million acres. Some real mountains up there, too- like Mt. Marcy, with a peak elevation of just over 5000 ft. MSL. Lovely wild country, with just a few small towns scattered around.
But of course we're looking at pics of New Jersey (the "Garden State")... also surprises people from the NYC area who always assumed the entire state was like the NY metro waterfront area- cities and refineries and junkyards. Most of it is very rural, although the land is rapidly being gobbled up by more and more condo villages, malls, etc.
