Banner Day at Asbury Park

Warning: bad pun alert!!  ;D

These are not fine quality, but I find them interesting...last time I was at friends' "down the shore", I saw quite a few banner-towing aircraft. These guys have inspired my dreams of flight since I was a little tyke, but I'm not so sure I'd want to earn my living picking up, towing, then precision-dropping these giant streamers. Might be fun to try it, though...

Caught this one while sitting on the porch a few blocks from the beach: usually they're out over the water; maybe he was heading south for another pass or something. Or possibly headed home; not sure where this one is based.

Probably a Citabria... you can clearly see the hook used to snag the banner line.
Image

Classic beach bum: a (Super?) Cub with cowling removed to aid cooling (and, I'll bet, for quick service).
Image

Off he goes, spreading the word about some drink special at a local bar...
Image

This guy was working hard that day- came back with another banner.

Thank you, intrepid birdman- now we know all about the champagen brunch at Sunsets in Neptune!! ;D

Hi Rotty :)

Have not seen anyone towing banners here in years.

I think I have seen them tow a banner over Toronto, Ontario once when I was up there.

I think the RE/MAX Hot Air Balloon fills the sky more than banner towing aircraft here.  Come to think of it I think that is the only hot air balloon one sees unless you go to a Balloon Fest.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Interesting shots. They used to do quite a bit of banner towing here in the old days but it doesn't seem so popular now. The pilots I knew who did it didn't particularly like it but a job's a job. Could be a tad risky depending on the conditions or if the release failed to operate. Strangely enough I 've seen one flying along the coast over the last few weeks. I couldn't read it until I took a long-range shot on full zoom.

Coconut for recognising the tow plane. ;)

Looks like a Wilga... I'd know that pinched fuselage and trailing-link gear anywhere.

I've not seen banners being towed for a long time, I've seen Hungarian helicopters with the flag unfurled underneath though...

There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

I'm impressed. You certainly know your aircraft. ;)
