Sorry folks, I was trying to keep this all in one thread, but there is no way I can do this and do justice to these planes.  Except for Warbirds, I spent more time in this area than any other.  I'm not quite good enough to name all of these, but I do know the major ones like the Stearman's, the Waco, and the Aircamper...

Can someone explain why there are no wing struts on these Staggerwings?


I absolutely fell in love with this Spartan Executive...


This is some kind of Super Stearman.  All I can say is that compared to other Stearman's, it is HUGE!

the large silver plane is a Howard DGA (Damn Good Airplane), unless I'm mistaken.

that Spartan was named after or designed i dunno by the guy who started Spartan School of Aviation, suppose to be one of the best flight schools in the world located in my hometown.

Very nice Kevin. I've enjoyed seeing Airventure through your eyes. (I also look forward to seeing what Ben comes up with.) The classics in this thread are all typically 'American' if you know what I mean.

That would be W.G. Skelly.

W.G. Skelly, President of Skelly Oil Company. He established Spartan Aircraft Company and formed the corporation that built Tulsa Municipal Airport (now called Tulsa International Airport).

Since 1928, this airport has been the home of Spartan. Mr. Skelly was convinced that air transportation would come of age and bring with it a need for skilled aircraft technicians and pilots; therefore, Spartan offered both mechanic and flight courses and quickly became a leader in aviation education.

Spartan's fame spread quickly, first nationally and then internationally. Students came from many states and foreign countries.

In the late 1930's Spartan was acquired by the Getty Corporation owned by the famous billionaire and oil tycoon J. Paul Getty.
