RC my way...

I decided to go down to storage and pull out ym RC boat.  The old girl has been locked away a while and I've missed sailing her.  She is a Kyosho Fairwind II, and when finished is almost three feet long and over five feet high.  Right now, I'm almost done prepping it for repainting.  I decided this time to remove all of the fake deck fittings and rigging this time, which is why you see all the Bondo.

This is my idea of RC.  No whining motors, no long runways needed, and definitly relaxing.  I can put my boat in, sitback and my boat will be a part of the scenery, instead of a distraction from it.  

I'll post a few more as I finish it up...

I was about that age, perhaps a year or two older when my dad started making me sand down bondo on his old ford escort...

What fun is it if you can't ride in it? I just went for my first sail of the season 2 days ago. Water is still pretty cold (about 57).

I finally got to primering the thing.  Give it a coat, sand it down, then do it again and it should be ready to paint...

All sanded and ready to go.

Just a wee bit of advice about boat maintainence, after sanding down you only need to apply the primer onto where there is bare wood. This is because normal paint doesn't stick to wood as it should. If there's paint there already then you can just go over the top of whats there.

And 767, model boat sailing is suprisingly enjoyable, even when you can go for real as there is bugger all effort involved. However, given the option I'd go for real sailing every time.

Sailing is definately one of the most enjoyable ways to spend your holidays (right after camping). Screw sitting on the beach all the time - you also get a decent tan while having fun on a boat.

Time to start painting!  The hull is going to be blue over white, with a white deck and a black waterline.  Then I'll put some red pinstriping over the blue.

After sanding down the primer, I masked the blue portion off, then wiped it down with alchohol wipes to remove any finger oils and such.

I'm using a special paint designed for plastic.  Peel it back while it's still wet, and... voila!

Tomorrow I'll work on the lower hull and waterline...

Just to let you know, the whole point of primer is that it's a base coat to which the paint can stick. You don't have to sand it down before applying the paint.

Actually, you do have to sand it down.  When applied, you can feel the grain in it, and it's very rough.  After a few minutes of sanding, it's smooth as glass and the paint still sticks.  Go tell an auto body man you don't need to sand it and see what he says..
