Am I looking at the curved track in the right of the picture? I was thinking about curved runways the other day for some reason, trying to get my head round landing on a banked curve...

Or am I looking at the big green airfield? We still have a couple of them in the UK... :)

Thought so. Cunning plan. The RAF/BAC tried it with the Jag once or twice...

If this is the same one there's a hidden runway.

Believe me, this Swiss would have had no reason to camouflage their airfields...

Maybe not now but according to the caption that first photo was taken during the Cold War. The one I posted was obviously taken recently as there are new buildings & the road is now a dual carriageway. The field layout is also completely different. There's also another photo on that site showing the airfield (Ambri) as I assume it is now.

I also found this. http://aeroflt.users.netlink.co.uk/waf/switz/swhist.htm
The Swiss Air Force

...........................

Not only do the Swiss keep their aircraft in immaculate condition, which accounts to a considerable degree for their long years of service but some of the landing fields listed above provide access to mountain caverns in which the entire air force can be hidden. This may entail hanging some of the aircraft from the ceiling of the caverns and the entire system gives some indication of how far the country is willing to go to protect its aircraft in an emergency.

One reason they've been able to stay neutral is because of their formidable defenses... aside from the mountains, they've been well-prepared for an attack; stuff like hidden runways and cave hangars is just part of it. The father of a friend of mine, who was a B24 navigator based in Italy during WWII, told me that they were always warned not to stray into Swiss airspace on their way into Germany, not so much because of Switzerland's neutral status, but because they would almost certainly be shot down...
