Popham Revisited 2

Postby Hagar » Mon May 16, 2005 10:46 am

A small selection of the record number of aircraft at yesterday's fly-in. They ran out of parking spaces so I couldn't have a good look at some of the later arrivals. I've cropped these down to get as many in as possible.

A fine example of the Tipsy Trainer. I saw another one at Old Warden earlier in the month.

The very rare DH.94 Moth Minor. Only one in the country I think. Shame about the colour which doesn't show up too well in any photo I've seen. Despite the big airbrake it couldn't get down on the sloping runway. After a couple of attempts he used the alternate.

The Aeronca Sedan. Another rare type these days. I think this is the only example on the UK register.

Not so rare but still interesting.

Anyone would think Miss Gabor was in that Cub... ;) ;D

I do like the Tipsy trainer. If it wasn't for the cost of the admin and engineering admin involved I'd get one in place of another car.

Very nice Doug! Do you save all your pics from air shows? If so you must have a lot of them! :)

I got a couple of shots of the cockpit which clarifies the unusual seating arrangement a little. It looks very cosy to say the least. ;)
I might post them in a separate thread later. Still not sure how the right-hand set of rudder pedals works. I couldn't see in properly or find the owner so I could ask him about it.

Wonderful Shots Doug :)

The DH.94 Moth Minor was he floating to much to get her down?
The only one in the country, his insurance must be awesome.

Thanks for posting them Doug.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Thanks Ben. Yes I save them all on a remote hard drive. Difficult to keep track of them all & they really need sorting out. I've taken literally 1,000s of photos since going digital a couple of years ago. Took over 300 yesterday. ::)

Thanks Doug. Yes, it doesn't show up in my shot but that runway is on a pretty steep incline. Even with that airbrake the Moth Minor appears to have a better glide ratio than the slope. Pilots of conventional modern aircraft have trouble if they're not used to it. I don't know how these chaps go on about insurance. Genuine vintage aircraft are irreplaceable & priceless.

Doug I'm green with envy, the only things I've seen today are an Mi-2 and an An-2. The 94 is beautiful, but that airbrake looks v.strange, does she have flaps as well?

Nope, I think that's all you get which is the reason he was having problems. The long high aspect-ratio high-lift wing makes it float on for ever, even on a normal runway & is probably why it needs that airbrake. Sailplane type spoilers might be more effective.

PS. I should have taken some closeups of the folding wing arrangement. That would make it very difficult to have conventional flaps.

What a nice bunch of birds! Some of them I've never seen before. Yes, the airbrake on the Minor is almost laughable, but I'll bet she flies like a dream...  :)
What's that  bent-wing plane? Bellanca?
