Afew more- Fleet Week/Millenium/July 4th 2000- NYC

Here are some more photos, taken mostly with a crummy old SLR on a very grim day. But it was an exciting day in NYC for aviation/military/nautical buffs!!
This first is from a C172 flying up the harbor the first day of Fleet Week. Hard to make out this lousy image (disposable pano camera- I shot without looking thru the viewfinder as is usually the case when I'm flying), but you can see wakes of small motorcraft and a few naval vessels, with the pre-9/11/01 skyline beyond. The beige smudges are bugs-or what's left of them!
Image
The next two are shot from Liberty State Park on the 4th, showing the chaotic mix of small sailboats, tall ships, warships, and small motor boats...

I just noticed today(LOL!) that the schooner under sail in this next one is the schooner Anne, owned by a fellow named Reid Stowe who I met a coupla years after taking these pix... he keeps her at Chelsea Piers and gives rides to friends and the public, but his upcoming project is 1000 days nonstop, un-resupplied,out of sight of land aboard the Anne with one other crew member. Check out his website (search "1000 days at Sea"- I can't recall the URL, and don't ask me to paste a link!) if you're interested.

Despite the marginal vis. and gusty breezes, the military stole the show with their series of flybys...here is a fine review of Coast Guard aircraft...
Image
Here's a pair of F18s passing the WTC...
Image
And finally a B2 doing the same. This guy yanked a big turn just then, and veered off to the west a bit, maybe so us folks onshore in NJ could have a better look...

I like the tall ships. Kinda reminds me of my summer holidays.

Hey... what kind of flightsim forum is this? "Windjammers"? Yes, it was quite a sight. I should've gone into Manhattan that week to see them close-up at their moorings (and take more pictures). I have more pics of the Anne, but they're on a floppy and my floppy drive seems to be unhappy all of a sudden...

I've seen so many pics of aircraft that I'm nearly sick of it. I need a change... ;)

There's a free download of the Cutty Sark that one can fly (!) or operate on the water (I think it's in the simviation library under "misc."), it's kind of silly, but it's certainly different. There's also a flying recliner that I really enjoy (Laz-E-Boy 3000) :D

Yeah, there are some shots of the Cutty Sark in the Freeware Screenshots forum.

Yup. Windjammers. You stand down wind on one and the name will suddenly become very clear indeed.

Anyway, we've all seen pictures of planes. We need something new! (Or old. Which ever the subject might be...)

I know what the word means::)...  I'm just busting chops, because I'm just a bit surprised to hear so much feedback about the nautical pictures. Not that I mind- I love 'em, too!  Sounds like you have some interesting personal experience with sailing- tell us about it sometime (if you haven't already). The whole of my sailing experience consists of nearly scuttling a Sunfish (?) on the reef in Jamaica years ago, and getting to haul some lines aboard the Anne last spring in NY Harbor. Enough for some great memories, but I want to try more. I did live aboard a cabin cruiser once for a year, but she didn't go anywhere (bent prop shaft)...

If you want to try sailing stay away from modern boats. Old gaff rigged things offer the best experience, not to mention attract the most attention when you go somewhere. ;D

As for my sailing experiences, when every holiday you ever remember taking is on a boat you start to appreciate the nice ones. ;D

Good advice, I'm sure. I enjoy sailing on the Anne, though- she's only about 30 yrs. old but Reid built her himself and she's pretty old-school: no power winches or anything like that. You're obviously at home on a boat... I'd be willing to sit on a boom like that, but would probably fall off. ;D

Sitting on the boom's easy. Walking out to the end of it's slightly harder. And climbing to the mastcap using nothing but your hands and the rigging is always a fun challenge. I do recommend shoes for the last one. Ropes tear your feet to shreds comming back down. ;D
