Hello,

What is cropping....does it take away the quality of the picture or increase the quality?

Thanks

Its just the cutting/trimming of a photo/screenshot to focus on an area you want to.

Basically what Charlie said.
to be more accurate, say you take a picture of a plane at an airshow and the plane being the main subject is slightly off center, you would crop out part of the image to make it centre. Or you would crop the image to take out some of the sky especially if its just plain blue. Its ike taking a pair of scissors  and cutting out the part of a photo you dont want

Check out any of my topics in this forum. Most of the photos I post here are cropped in some way & I post a lot of photos. I crop them either to position the subject (usually an aircraft) exactly where I want it or to reduce the height of the image & therefore the file size. I usually but not always do both.

Quick example. 3 images all from the same original photo.

Original photo. Uncropped & resized to 640 pixels width. File size 26.5k
Image

Cropped & resized to 640. File size 30.3k
Image

Cropped differently & resized to 640. File size 38.6k
Image

All done in IrfanView. I could improve the quality by changing the amount of JPEG compression.
