Yeovilton statics

I told Craig I'd post some static shots so here they are. This was my first-ever visit to Yeovilton so I set out early on Saturday morning. Dark & wet when I left home but as I arrived the sky was clearing nicely. When the gates opened I headed straight for the static park.

The "Red Bull" Sea Vixen with a nice blue sky backgound.


Aha. Here's what I came to see. The little Sea Hawk & standing right next to it the magnificent Sea Fury.



A rather sad-looking Stringbag less engine. I don't remember seeing one fly this season.


TFC Skyraider from Duxford.


I asked the pilot to pose for me in front of his Blackhawk. (I think it's a Blackhawk. Don't know much about helos.) Nice friendly chap. I forgot to ask where he hails from.

Of course, it was all too good to last. This was taken at lunchtime after I got drenched.


At least I did get to see the Sea Fury & Sea Hawk fly.

Teh more I see the Sea Hawk,. the more it's threatening to edge out the Hunter as the prettiest jet....

Thanks Craig. It was actually much busier than it looks in my shots. You have to bide your time & pick your moment. This is all part of the illusion.

I'm inclined to agree. It would make an excellent FS/CFS project. Don't think I've seen one for any version of FS. (maybe Mike Hill did one for FS5.) It looks just too innocent & graceful to be an effective fighter but I suppose the same thing could be said of the Spitfire. I'm told it excelled in the ground attack role. Something like the Sea Hawk is what I would have expected from Supermarine rather than that dreadful Attacker.

The German Navy (who passed them on to India) Sea Hawks had a taller fin and rudder, which, as I understand, made them more stable.  Either way, my closest encounter with a Sea Hawk was with a static display at the Gatow Luftwaffe museum in Sept 2000.

For those who may not know, the Sea Hawk, while appearing to be a twin engined airplane, is actually a single engined jet with a novel bifurcated exhaust.  I believe it was the only production aircraft so designed.

Quite right. I'm not sure any other countries operate the Black Hawk. (I found out that's the correct spelling.)

Shame about the weather, but still some cracking shots. I just love the Sea Fury and am so glad they finally got the engine and fuel situation sorted out.

Both RNHF Swordfish are out of servie this year but with any luck they should have them flying for next season.
