Sunday morning at the airstrip

It wasn't quite Duxford but the owners of a local airstrip arranged a fly-in to commemorate D-Day last Sunday. I was kindly invited to attend. The first fighters to fly over the beach-heads in the early hours of June 6th 1944 took off from here. It was quite an experience to be there 60 years later. These are the squadrons based at Deanland in 44.


Over 70 aircraft were expected from all over the country. Here's some of the first arrivals.

The Isaacs Fury. A scale replica of the Hawker Fury pre-war fighter. I'm told it was the brainchild of one of the Supermarine design staff at Eastleigh. I can just see Ozzy in this.

Id that guy wearing a oxygen mask???
I'm guessing but let me know if I'm correct, that isn't for oxygen but so he can speak into the radio and be heard?
I notice it has no canopy.
But they look like a blast to fly!

I'm sure you're correct & it's a mic. Convenient but I'm not sure it would suit me. Bone domes seem to be popular with private pilots these days. I suspect the conventional headset with boom mic wouldn't be much use in an open cockpit.

Great shots Doug, odd you should mention me and the Fury, I've just re-read Spitfire - A Test Pilots Story and could all to easily see myself in the cockpit
