After seeing Ken's (Rifleman's) latest photos I thought I would post these. A few random shots I took at Shoreham this morning. You never know what you're likely to see on a normal day at my local airport. The quality varies but the idea is to show Craig & Ben what it's like at some of the smaller airfields.

Not a good shot but you don't see too many of these around nowadays. Nice aeroplane.

some really nice shots. I love that bizjet:) I am gonna have to find a small airport thats nearby and pay it a visit. They seem to be a haven for unusual and rare aircraft. Cant wait to see the other pics

Thanks Doug. That "cement wall" is the quarry for the old Portland Cement works at Beeding. It's been closed for years now. The South Downs are formed of pure chalk which is used in the cement.

The aerials on top of the hill are what's left of RAF Truleigh Hill. This was a hush-hush radio/radar establishment in WWII & still used during the Cold War. There are lots of mysterious tunnels & machinery buried in the hillside.

The flying field that we are looking at now...was that part of the RAF Station?

Could someone actually go through the tunnels now?

No Doug. Truleigh Hill was under the control of the RAF but was never an airfield & it's quite separate from Shoreham. I'll have to check this out for you but I'm sure a Canadian squadron was based at Shoreham during WWI. It was used as a reserve landing ground during WWII & a RAF Air-Sea Rescue Walrus squadron was based there. RAF Tangmere & RNAS Ford are a few miles to the west. The whole area is surrounded by airfields. Most of these were temporary airstrips used when the proper bases had been put out of action. As you say, this place is full of history.

Still looking for details of that WWI Canadian squadron. I remember them having a reunion & some sort of dedication ceremony at the airport terminal not long ago.

Some more beautiful shots!

I finally tracked down that plaque I mentioned. I remember what it was all about now. No. 1 Wing of the C.A.F was formed at Shoreham in November 1918. There used to be a group photo but this is all I can find so far. It's on the wall of the conference room in the terminal building.
