Man, what a place for an airport THIS is! Why on earth would they build it?

Just this morning I was playing with settings and found a airport in Antartica, don't remember the name but it said "ice runway" so I checked it out.
It was something like this one in the photo but in the sim the runways stuck out in the ocean to what seemed like a mile. They ran of the land just like a pier.
Don't know if this is a scenery problem or just the way it was put in the sim?
But it is uncanny that Pippin posted this photo the same day I say the one in FS9.

Pippin:
Looks like my kind of place, I can (land) and not hit anything. Ok, I still can't land in a cross wind, I more or less, arrive.
