Early Geebee racer?

Funny you should say that but even a Gee Bee was never that fat. It's the Stipa Caproni, designed by Luigi Stipa and built by the Caproni factory in Italy, using the "flying barrel" concept. Works much like a ducted fan. I was surprised to find that somebody actually built a full-scale replica of it. http://www.seqair.com/Hangar/Zuccoli/Legends/Legends.html

PS. Oops. Sorry, make that 65% scale.

i really wouldn't say that plane is ugly. i think it would make a nice character for a pixar movie or so! you know, it would have feelings and can talk to his plane-buddies and stuff ;D

Guess I won't be trying to stump anybody with my picture of the Gipsy-powered Stipa... sigh...
That Caproni  is one odd duck. It almost looks like it wouldn't fly...
And I agree with those who say the A-10 and OV-1 have a certain utilitarian beauty...

Not sure I agree with that. I've seen some that are definitely not pretty. I often wondered what the designers were thinking of to create some of these monstrosities, let alone be proud of their work. ::)

Strangely enough I find some French designs the least attractive, considering many aviation pioneers came from France & their reputation for style.

Okay okay, I take it back! what I meant was I like the planes that people think are ugly. Like the A-10, it may not be sleek and gracefull, but I think it looks cool, and what plane could take a hit like that thing? also, I didnt realize that the fat Italian plane was tubular, that makes it interesting in my book, not ugly.

Alex. I've taken the liberty of resizing your image before it gets deleted. It's way over the forum limit & throws the whole thing out of kilter.
