Really now ?

Postby Rifleman » Sun Apr 14, 2013 4:09 pm

Middle of Edmonton Alberta, there is a museum which I stumbled upon....really....never had it in mind to look in the south oil country. A Voodoo, Norseman, and a Bomarc are the standing gate guards which caught my attention. I made a mental note to visit after seeing the hours of operation. Next day I arrived right in the middle of them taking delivery of a new display piece. An F-104 in two shipping containers from over in Europe somewhere. Took some pics and then proceeded inside, to find a few old birds that have been reasonably restored to their previous glory, but I really never in my wildest dreams, expected to find this.......

Hi rifleman,

Nice to see those aircraft again, the mossy was one of two flying many years ago, I saw that one in the museum there as well. It had been in good flying condition but it was left out during a storm and was damaged beyond repair to flying condition.

You should have seen a prototype Spitfire as well?, many of my photos that I took when i visited did not develope.

I stayed at the ramada Inn next door to the museum : Reason I was there?

It was 9/11 and i was on my way from Heathrow to SFO with work and we had to land at Edmonton International, I was working on mainly gaming consoles back then.
maybe You have seen games on consoles where you use a light based gun for shooting.
I was going to the microchip factory for testing. That took some explaining.

Probably the only person allowed to carry electronic equipment in my suitcase at the time - long story but it was best I didn't carry what I had
in my hand luggage!!

Have a look through your photos, as the Spitfire picture of mine didn't develop.

regards

Steve

Well done Ken...wonderful shots... <<u

Good to see the Herman Nelson Heater hooked to the Norseman.

Gives folks an idea what we actually used in the north during the Winter... <<q

In shot four (4) I remember those type of wood and metal boxes, metal cans and luggage trunk. We still have two of those trunks just like that one.
The weight scales, nice touch, that is how we did it prior to loading.

You have to love those Norseman skis... <<q
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Doug, I have more that you may like,....will try to get them up in a day or two......tough to do with not being at home, but at least I have a laptop with me that includes the necessary image manipulation software....I'd never try to post images that aren't their very best that they can be, even with a camera phone. Not that these were shot on a phone anyway......

Hi Rifleman,

Sorry, I must have confused things with saying I landed at the the International and that 'I stayed at the ramada Inn next door to the museum'

The museum is at the corner of the Edmonton City airport as you obviously know but that is next door ( near as dam it) to the Ramada in, if you come out of the museum and turn right, the hotel was two mins walk away, just past the Edmonton City flying club.

The spitfire was inside the museum and I think it was 5/8 of full size spitfire.

Update: I've found the spitfire pictures (actually think it's Hurricane looking at dorsal part of the fuss) and I'll upload once I've resized them and all mine are very grainy.

Hi All,

Maybe it's just me but: I find it irritating that prop driven aircraft with 3 blades or more on display always have the props positioned
the same, I find it bad simply because it doesn't happen naturally

Anybody else with similar thoughts.

regards

I guess it's just for symmetry sake......I'd prefer to have the top blade verticle, giving more clearance but twice the chance of bumping into one when walking around the aircraft...

Also Steve, there was no sign of the Hurri, or the Lysander, for that matter.....I would have been all over both of them.....

Your outdoor shots were interesting, and although I did see and shoot the Sabre, I don't recall seeing the T-33/F-80.......however after looking at your shots, I think it's safe to say that even from the print you uploaded, there was more information which could be dug out of that them.....here is how I found the F-86/T-33 image could be processed, after the fact.....

Confused though - you know when you look at something and it doesn't quite look right... Turns out it's a B.35 in disguise as an FB.VI - so fighter windscreen and a solid nose.

The thing that didn't look right? I'd never seen a solid nosed Mossie with intakes under the spinners. Took 24 hrs to work out, but it's funny how the human brain works!

Gorgeous though indeed! <<s

Nice Norseman; I've had a soft spot since watching "Captains of the Clouds" many moons ago. Like a Beaver, but older and cooler. <<u
