Two go mad in Wales once again, get cold, go home

Postby 61_OTU » Wed Sep 26, 2007 3:00 pm

Well, once again Craig and I subjected ourselves to unnecessary hardship and deprivation, to see if we could succeed in taking pictures of low flying aircraft.

We intend to go again once we are fully recovered from the frostbite and are discharged from Bangor hospital.

In the meantime here's what we got as consolation prizes for our patience/arrogance/stupidity*

Great shots mate, mine were all write offs sadly. Mainly because by the time we got anything I was too cold to jump at the chance ;D

As for the F15, for some reason the Americans not only like to take the strangest route through the loop, this one went by us and over the top instead of the south route through to Mach. But they also dont seem to like flying low level. We said they need to come through it in a tornado just once. ;) :)

Foreign aircraft appear to operate on stricter rules than the RAF. In general RAF low flying is done down to 250ft MSD (Minimum Separation Distance), although 100ft is permitted in some tactical training areas. Looking at some old Hansard notes, it appears foreign aircraft are generally cleared to 500ft, although German and Belgian aircraft 1000ft. The TTTE (Anglo/German/Italian) when it was still around also had an MSD of 500ft, as opposed to other OCUs of 250ft.

This would explain the F-15 going over the top, rather than down the middle... :)

Thanks for the kind comments chaps.

I would also officially like to stick up for Craig and his driving skills.

During the journey Craig's driving was such that when accelerating, overtaking, braking and pulling out from junctions he never caused me sufficient concern to open my eyes for more than a few seconds at a time  ;)  ;D

The rest of the time my eyes were screwed tight shut, and anyway, had they been open my hands in front of my face would have stopped me from seeing my impending doom  :o

There, now that's settled, I'm off to buy a wireless webcam, 150 Netgear wireless repeaters and 151 solar cells so that I can set up Bwlch TV, bringing lowfly to the world. Reasonable subscription rates will apply  ;)

Cheers

Steve
