To avoid this annoying effect, one should use a flash that doesn't align with the line of sight of the person in the picture. Simply use an external flash ( raised higher above the lens) and even turn the flashhead upwards to bounce the light of a ceiling or wall.

If one uses a compact camera, one will have to remove the red eyes in photoshop, by colouring the iris black...  ;)

I've seen cases where serious eye disease was detected by comparing red-eye effects in photos.

If one uses a compact camera, one will have to remove the red eyes in photoshop, by colouring the iris black...  ;)

I find the red-eye flash mode works very well on mine. That's when I remember to change the settings.

Not everyone has Photoshop. Most graphics editing software has a red-eye removal feature.
