Meh, I still like to pull off the odd 400 yard shot with my trusty 45/70. The velocity is so slow that one can enjoy a nice cup of tea while waiting for impact. ;D I also enjoy a little squirrel hunting with my 100+ year old Marlin 32/20.

Wow..  two classic calibers. I've got a Springfield clone of Sharps 45.70 Carbine. Last time I shot it, it knocked the lenses out of my glasses.. had just the frames still on my nose  :D  And the 32.20 is a notoriously accurate round (a bit much for squirrel though)..

They're pretty slick-looking... but how do you find them in the dark? ;) :D

In my world, they would be strapped to your body and constant training would have muscle memory directing you to your weapon of choice depending on what the job was

Of course, if zombies converge on your house, you need something with more accuracy, to pick them off before they mess up the lawn too much.

That's where that Remington comes in..

Who mentioned zombies? I'm sorry, but it always makes me think of this dialogue from Night of the Living Dead:

Field Reporter: Are they slow-moving, chief?

Sheriff McClelland: Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up.

Field Reporter: Chief, if I were surrounded by eight or ten of these things, would I stand a chance with them?

Sheriff McClelland: Well, there's no problem. If you have a gun, shoot 'em in the head. That's a sure way to kill 'em. If you don't, get yourself a club or a torch. Beat 'em or burn 'em. They go up pretty easy.
;D ;D ;D

So out of curiosity, how much difference in accuracy could I expect from my 7mm Remington 700 rifle, .243 Reminton 700 rifle, and my 30-06 Winchester Model 70 rifle? I know a lot of variables involving ammo can change things, but overall?

I think thats more down to your ability and having the weapon set up exactly for your range.

300m with .303, mutliple bullseyes!  ;D  (After the rifle was set up properly, of course)

The diffrence betwen those rounds, all other things being equal, is mostly range.

Exterior ballistics (what happens to a bullet after it leaves the barrel) is a complex science. Different bullet weights and shapes behave differently, and to complicate it; different velocities also come iinto play. Lotsa variables. Just to touch on it (because whole forums can be devoted to this topic).. That 7mm Magnum can be loaded to mind-bending velocities, and reach out accurately to several hundred meters.. BUT a loading that potent might have the bullet still trying to stabilize itself.. literally flyng a wobbly, spiral trajectory at 100 meters. Conversley, a load (bullet weight, shape, powder-charge) set up for 100 meter accuracy, would have the bullet losing stability and velocity at longer ranges.

Interior ballistics come into play too,
