St Davids

Postby Mictheslik » Wed Nov 05, 2008 5:24 pm

Guess I'd better post some non aviation shots :P

I spent a lovely week in West Wales last week and did a few nice coast walks (pics to come when resized etc.) but we stayed in the cosy little city of St Davids, the smallest city in Britain (It's a village with a whopping great cathedral). The cathedral is very picturesque, being set in it's own rural close and being bordered by the ruined bishop's palace. It was built in a valley to protect the artifacts inside from the vikings and as a result is on marsh, hilly ground. Inside the pillars all lean outwards and you climb up to the altar :P

A few arty shots using my favourite polariser :D

Soon to come are pictures from Whitesand, St Justinians, Caerfai and St David's airfield :P

Very interesting Mic. That's a lovely old cathedral.

That's rather odd. What came first, the cathedral or the village? I never understood what the criteria are for a town (or village) to become a city. The small town of Arundel not far from me has a whopping great castle & an impressive cathedral yet it's still classed as a town. Meanwhile, the large adjoining towns of Brighton & Hove were recently combined into a city. They don't have a cathedral between them.

The term "City" has been devalued somewhat recently IMO.. even Croydon applied for City status  ::)

If I'm correct, the term is "Cathedral City" which is  more synonymous with old Cities, like Canterbury, Norwich, Salisbury etc.

Wonderful shots Mic...thanks for taking us along.   :)

I would think one would have to have or rent a vehicle to get to some of those locations.  Just purchasing a train pass probably wouldn't do it would it?
