Popham Van's fly-in June 08 Pt 3

Postby Hagar » Wed Jun 11, 2008 6:16 pm

More from Sunday's fly-in. This time a few high-wing US types mainly of the Piper family.

First a couple of nice J-3 Cubs. They're not all yellow. ;)
Image

The L-4H Grasshopper variant. I can't trace this one's history so don't know if the markings are genuine.

Two immaculate PA-18 Super Cubs.

The PA-17 Vagabond. Basically a side-by-side seat short-wing variant of the J-3 with 65hp Continental. This one is based here at Popham.
Image

Looks like another Vagabond but it's a PA-22-108 Colt with its nosewheel surgically removed. I believe there is a kit available for doing this.
It's quite a popular mod now & the original nosewheel Colts & Tri-Pacers are becoming quite a rare sight.
Image

A smart Aviat A-1B Husky. This was reputedly an all-new new design back in 1985 but it owes a lot to the Piper Cub.
Image

Another resident. This one has no connection with Piper that I know of but it's always nice to see it.
Melvyn Hiscock's immaculate Rearwin Cloudster. I believe it's the only example in Europe.
