Who can tell me what kind of airplane this?

Postby Aerophile » Sun Sep 02, 2007 12:18 pm

Because I don't know.  I was at a non-towered airport with a student about a month or so ago, saw this thing glaring in the distance, snapped a picture, and wasn't able to get a good look at the photo until I downloaded it onto my computer.  I figure that one of you expert spotters could perhaps ID it for me.

First idea... the Airbus Beluga, though it seems to have props instead of jetengines... I'm looking into this...

edit: Nope, it's the super guppy!

Cool catch!

Nice shot of a rare bird. It is NASA's Super Guppy.

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

They used to use the Super Guppies to haul Airbus parts until they built their own Belugas. Now, I think they are mainly hauling parts for the ISS.

Thanks guys.  Too bad I didn't have a better camera than my rink-e-dink Kodak if it's that rare.  I looked on Airliners.net for it and it looks like a lot of spotters have caught it at Ellington Field in Houston.  Maybe I'll do another cross country down there to see if I can spot it.

Thanks again!

Well, do you want to plan and fly the cross-country portion of your IFR stage check all the way to Ellington?  It might cost you a little more than the local flight I had planned but I'm up for it if you are.   ;D
