RAF Cosford 10/2/07 - National Cold War Exhibition

Postby 61_OTU » Sat Feb 10, 2007 7:16 pm

Hi chaps,

Wednesday this week saw the opening of the new hall at RAF Cosford, the National Cold War Exhibition.

I decided to drag all the junior OTU's off for a jolly afternoon out looking at planes, after a morning of retail therapy to lessen their resolve, and the promise of a Pizza Hut to round off the day.

Nice to see the Valiant in the warm and the dry at last, pity the photographic opportunity isn't so great though, still better than the Victor, which looks lovely, but can't be framed for a decent shot. This Valiant is not only the last surviving example, but a real exaple of living history, being the first British aircraft to release a hydrogen bomb

This ex-Romanian Mig 21 is looking right into the wing root of the Valiant, the kids asked me if it was a 'real one', and you can see why when you look at the scale of it. However, look right down it's nose and you can see it means business...

Vulcan and Hunter. What's nice is that you get really close to the planes, right underneath and up to the wheels. Rather than a boundary that keeps you feet away from the aircraft you feel up close and personal

Vulcan and Lightning, very shiny Lightning indeed......

The Avro York, DC3, Javelin, Belfast and Hastings...there's a Twin Pioneer and a Jetstream hiding down there somewhere too.....and a Mini, a Beetle, a Trabant, an Opal Senator, a section of the Berlin wall.... what more could you ask for?

Jolly good day out, and it's free....they've also set about tidying up some of the other hangars too...

There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!
