Stuck in Chicago...

Well, we almost got finished here in time but of course a big fat gremlin turned up at one of the restaurants just when we were finishing up last night.
Wasted time fiddling with it this morning when I could have been out sightseeing and/or flying... grrrrr...
And of course we have to RMA something... it should arrive tomorrow morning, so we're staying one more night.

If all goes well in the morning, I may have time to make a short flight before heading to O'Hare... fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, since we could do nothing until tomorrow, we made a brief excursion into the city for some deep-dish goodness at Lou Malnati's.
Strolled a bit in fierce -10F winds to this bridge, where as it turns out a camera chopper was about to do a couple of low passes for some upcoming feature... tried to catch it on video, but it was fast and it was black. Pretty cool, though...it zoomed right up this canal from right to left, shooting the faces of the buildings on the right at about 60 AGL., with a big fancy Steadycam pod on its belly. Bell something-or -other, I think; I could barely tell.

But what a crisp, clear night for shooting the skyline!

It's worse today, it's a big fat 0 F without the windchill, and -11 F with it. (here at least)

Cool story about the chopper though, I've been down to Chicago many times, but never been fortunate enough to see something like that.  To get there though, we have to drive by O'Hare, so it's not really a loss.  I'll bet Mayor Daley was sitting in his office, in a corner, violently trembling thinking of an aircraft flying so close to his city.

Chicago is such a neat city. If I had to live in a MAJOR city, it'd be my choice.

I'm taking the train through the mountains in April, from Toledo to Portland (gonna try to meet up with NickN while there). I'm spending a night in the windy city.. really looking forward to it. Train spotting is almost as much fun as plane spotting.

It was a total fluke: Pete wanted me to see this canal, so we went over there... and two movie crew crowd-wranglers were patrolling the bridge to keep it clear for when the chopper went by... unlike the a-holes who do this on shoots in NYC, they were very pleasant and told us what was about to happen.
My hat's off to those two: they'd been out there for hours and it was COLD.

My battery diedon the first pass, and by this point P. was so frozen he went back to the restaurant... I braved the extreme cold for one more pass. too bad it was so dark... that wpould've been a cool clip.
