The Simulator (1)

Postby Ijineda » Tue Nov 28, 2006 5:38 am

Some of you surely remember what I got for birthday: flight training in a professional Sim! So yesterday was the day, and here are some shots!

The Sim is practically used all the time, so after briefing I had to wait one hour for the other crew to finish.

Image

The Sim is based on three "legs" which can move in every direction. Its obligatory to wear safety-belts in the sim as the movements can get quite violent. The "force feedback" feeling is unbelievable; when you increase thrust for example, the Sim will lean backwards to simulate the sensation of acceleration. Combined with the images, you cant tell the difference from reality. Same for brakes - the Sim leans forward. Those angles can surpass 45 degrees!

On the right side you see the "screen" surrounding the cockpit inside. Also notice the small emergeny exits on the side.

Finally it was time to move inside and take the F/O

That was a wonderful gift. You're very lucky. ;)

Any idea who manufactured it?

It was built by Thales UK. http://www.thalesgroup.co.uk/press-room/latest-news/latest-news-home.cfm?articleid=16165445
It seems they took over the Redifon Simulation works at Crawley (near Gatwick) where my brother worked for many years.
