Dunsfold 2006

Postby Hagar » Mon Aug 28, 2006 6:48 am

An impression of the Wings & Wheels show at Dunsfold yesterday. A tad disjointed at times but a very varied & entertaining show. (No names, no pack drill but I could have done without one of the commentators.)

Here's some of the RAF's contribution. I'm not a big fan of helicopters but they put on impressive displays.

B O'B?

Looked a nice show. Shame that it appears that the Red Arrows' TRA was infringed again, albeit thankfully as they were landing. What is people's problem this year? That's three times now. Some heads need banging together as there are some ignorant civvies about - I wonder how he felt when he saw one of the Reds pull alongside to get his registration, if he noticed at all...

Of course, it also upset the whole show schedule as nothing could move until the Reds landed. Everything went rather flat for a while.

Very nice indeed Doug. We've had a group of 4 Zlins practicing over the flat all weekend (when it wasn't raining) and I still don't know what for!!!

Would someone please explain me what happened?

Basically, when the Reds display, they are given their own TRA (Temporary Restricted Airspace) - effectively a "bubble" (5nm I think) in which they can operate without infringement. This is published in advance, and appears as a NOTAM etc...

On three occasions this year, this restricted airspace has been infringed - twice by powered aircraft, and once by a pair of gliders (who were possibly based at a field inside the TRA). Unfortunately for the offenders, Red 1 will normally dispatch one of the team to find out who it is, and collect his registration. A high profile case a couple of years back lead to a pilot (IIRC) getting a very hefty fine (

Some idiot in a GA aricraft ventured into restricted airspace during the Red's display. Obviously didn't read his NOTAMs. ::)

Must be a Kenny Everett fan. :D

Nice... although there's something disturbing about choopers doing stunts. Maybe it's because they shouldn't fly in the first place... ;) ;D

I hope I get to see the Red Arrows up-close someday; very impressive.
