It isn't really that colour it's just the camera underexposing.

It's also due to the weather. Without the sun to illuminate the smoke, it doesn't show as bright white, instead, that muddy brown.

On my pictures taken in similar weather conditions the smoke is white...??

Looking at those pictures the weather appears to be patchy which would mean the sun broke out sporadically, you possible took yours when the sun was out.

Well my camera isnt the best... its a HP 735 3.2mp (about two years old)

and the weather was nice... didnt rain once.. but i got some sunburn.. :(
