Sound of Speed at KSTJ: highlights

Postby TacitBlue » Mon Jul 10, 2006 6:56 pm

So, there was finally an airshow in my cruddy little town. :P Here are the best pics That I and my dad took at the show. I may post some more later today or tomorrow after I have gone through them all.

Image
This is John Klatt in his Staudacher S-300. This guy put on a great show. I don't know much about him, but apparently he is sponsored by the Air National Guard.

This was taken at the end of the F/A-18 "tactical demo". This pilot did some amazing things, I didn't know that a Super Hornet could do that harrier maneuver.

Image
This is a display team called the Red Eagles. One of the planes is a Pitts S-2, but the other one is this....

...and I don't know what it is. Can anyone identify it? Whatever it is, they put on a great display too.

All in all, this was a good show, and it had a great turn-out. The crowd was so large in fact that I couldn't get very many good shots of the static display aircraft, but I got a few. I'll have to weed through them and find some that are good enough to post. ;)

P.S. Credit where credit is due, my Dad took the first two photos and I took the other three.

EDIT, the aircraft that the red eagles use are a Christen eagle, and a Talon Eagle,

Great set of shots though.

Nice one. The mystery plane is called a Talon Eagle. http://www.redeagleairsports.com/

I didn't know that a Super Hornet could do that harrier maneuver.

Which Harrier manoeuvre would that be?  bet it can't hover or fly backwards. :P ;)

(compression killed this pic)

It shouldn't. Not an aerial shot against a plain sky background.  Mail me the original & I'll see what I can do.

Very impressive, Tacit. :)

Doug, I think what he means is that the Hornet can stand on its tail. I might be wrong, but I saw something like that at a show not too long ago. Very neat to watch. :)

Yeeow, that first shot is incredible!!  8) 8)
It sort of looks like that A10/P51 shot was killed more by either too much zooming (almost looks like digital zoom), or overcropping a non-zoomed image. than by compression.
The " it's over 2000 wide, so hacking it down to 8x6 ought to yield a nice crispy pic" idea doesn't always work out... :P

Thanks for the comments all :).

Now that I have gotten the original of that A-10/P-51 shot from my dad, I see that that Rotty is right. So thanks anyway Hagar, but I don't think it can be helped.

The harrier thing: The Maneuver I was refering to could be described as this- The aircraft flyes very slowly and low to the ground. The nose is pointed almost vertical like it is balanced on the thrust from the engines. I thought that the name of this stunt was The Harrier, but I guess not, LOL.

I believe you're talking about the high alpha pass ;)

Really like this set of shots :)

That is by far the coolest thing to see at an airshow, especially with the Blue Angels.  I believe the Thunderbirds are doing it too now.

My favorite part of the F/A-18C Demo is during the high alpha pass when the narrator says, "the only aircraft in the world that can fly slower than the Hornet is the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet"  Well... other than a hovering aircraft of course...

That Rhino demo is quite astounding.  Over seas she does the exact same rutine... except with a little added weight under the wings (like 17,000 lbs!!!).

Anyway, I'm going to be seeing this aircraft THIS WEEKEND!  Oohh, I'm so excited!  My favorite airplane!
The day is always better when you're flying upside down.
