Indeed, like Charlie says, it'd be a real sight to see a TSR2 on the flightline :)

I don't recall seeing the TSR.2 in the air but I've seen most of the others displayed at Farnborough in the good ol' days. :P ;)

That reminds me. I've seen it flying. I wonder how many here can say that? :P :D

Tell us more Doug, and for those of you who haven't been to Cosford (and who don't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things aeroplane), this is what the man in the nose used to do

I was fortunate enough to have grown up during the "Golden Age" of the British aviation industry. The Farnborough Air Show in the 1950s-60s was quite different to what it is now. It was then an annual event & the aircraft manufacturers displayed their latest prototypes, flown by their chief test pilots like John "Cats Eyes" Cunningham, Neville Duke & Peter Twiss who were as famous as any film star. These took far less time to develop than aircraft do now & it was nothing unusual to see 10 new aircraft we'd never seen before. I'll be forever grateful to my old Dad for taking me & my brother to these fabulous events. He is to blame for my passion with aviation from a very early age. ::) ;)

This is the sort of thing we were used to seeing.
Avro test pilot Roly Falk caused a sensation at the 1955 Farnborough Air Show by slow-rolling the second production aircraft (Avro Vulcan) during its display. Thus giving a clear demonstration of the control and stability of the still strange-looking aircraft.

Also the RAF Black Arrows display team (111 Squadron), forerunners of the Reds with their all-black Hawker Hunters. At the 1958 show they did a formation loop & barrel roll with 22 aircraft which is still a record today.

Unfortunately digital cameras hadn't been invented then so I have no photos. :'(

Jolly nice too. ;)

What's with those stupid flags draped all over the place? I suppose it's to attract the kiddies. Rather spoils the atmosphere. ::)

Funny; i didn't even notice the banners until you mentioned them... Grumpy. ;) ;D I was distracted by those magnificent planes...
Fantastic airplanes bring their own atmosphere...

I'm all for starting them young but I think they're underestimating the intelligence of children. That's the sort of thing that would appeal to my 6-month old granddaughter. They'll be putting Tellytubbies in the cockpits next. :o ;)

Hi Doug, they have a cool spitfire thing in a wind tunnel, you have to control using rudders and a control stick. Various things allowing you to experience the weight and flexibility of differant metals and woods used in aircraft manufacture. You really need to make a trip up to Cosford, to see the place:)
