A few more from Popham 1st Jan

Postby Hagar » Tue Jan 03, 2006 2:14 pm

I've been going through the photos I took at the New Year's Day fly-in. Thought these were worth posting.

Lots of pretty little home-built single-seaters around these days. I'm not sure what this one is.

An immaculate Beagle-Auster Terrier 2 in its original colour scheme. Just like the one we had at the Southern Aero Club at Shoreham in the eartly 1960s. It cost

Your Auster t apparently got hit in the beak - looks like an engine change from a Gypsy to a Continental flat???  Which makes it look like a Piper product..  ??

Great shots there,

the kite in the first shot is a Corby cj-1 Starlet and is powered by a Volkswagen 1834 engine

also the auster (G-AMTM) in the pic has a Blackburn Cirrus Minor II engine in it.... still an auster though,

And the last shot (G-AHNR) is a Taylorcraft bc12d powered by a Continental Motors Corp A65-8 engine,

and again Great shots there, please keep posting your photos

But a chippie is supposed to look like a Chipmunk, not something else. Thats why its such a nice looking aircraft.

I'm surprised there's not more conversions like this as some engine spares are difficult to get hold of now. Even when they were available things like flexible hoses were very expensive. Being a British design they're all special hoses & not interchangeable with anything else. One thing that struck me is that the Lycoming engine rotates in the opposite direction to the original Gipsy Major. I'm not sure how this affects the rudder trim as the fin is offset on some aircraft to counteract torque. Note the large rudder deflection on take-off in my photo. This might have been to counteract the crosswind.

There was a Chipmunk flying around here some years ago with a highly modified Ford V6 car engine with an aluminium crankcase. This was developed by Bonner Engineering at Shoreham & the Chippie was used as a testbed. I don't know what happened to it or the engine.

There you go then. Good old Charlie comes up trumps again. :D

Now I come to think of it I seem to remember Bill Bonner telling me it had been converted back to its original state. I still don't know what happened to his engine. It was a fine piece of engineering.

LMAO, that caught me off guard, that's just wrong. ;D

Good photos Hagar. I like the looks of that little home-built in the first shot.

Good for you John, for catching the Corby.....first real one I've seen and very nice with an open cockpit....I have plans for building a model of this fine Australian homebuilt............very close coupled though and will be quite sensitive in roll and pitch, even when the "C of G" is spot on..........
