Finally... a non-corporate install (part 1)

Too many boring boardrooms and endless service calls this year; finally got another "show" system to do, this time in a 17th-century Episcopalian church in Rye, NY. And the consultant is a good friend of mine who used to work with my co. No dumb mistakes this time- he's good.
Here's some highlights of the walk-through; I'll be posting more as the work commences in December....

The place is in good shape considering its age, but i understand there was a fire in the 1800s and much of it was rebuilt. They recently got a landmark grant and are making many more improvements, including a new PA and a video system for recording events and providing "spillover" monitoring. I'm a very happily lapsed Catholic myself, but I love old churches.



Basically we're replacing the well-done but cheesy Realistic stuff with a modest Tannoy line array and EAW delays; new mics for choir, altar, pulpit, and organ, and state-of-the-art processing.




Fortunately, the church's technical guy is very knowledgeable, and he's also tapped an electrical contractor familiar with the building to do the really hard stuff: pulling the new cable thru this ancient, delicate structure. They've already made tape marks... one of the line arrays will hang here, with a safety slung thru the crook of that arch. Yay... rigging!!

That's a nice looking building. Like you I love these old churches. We have a lot of much older ones around here going back to Saxon times.

PS. This is the parish church at Sompting where I lived for many happy years after I was married. http://www.bn15.co.uk/history/stmary.html I don't think has much in the way of a sound system or anything else for that matter.
The church is right next door to Sompting Peveril, home of the late George Miles the aircraft designer. I have no idea of the significance of the name Peveril.

Two or three weeks; something like that, with at least two of us working on it after the electricians have done their thing. Shouldn't be a problem, as there's not much at all going on in there except on Sundays (duh). That's another problem with the office installs- either have to work after hours, or they're kicking you out at 5 pm...
We're also installing a big plasma and 7.1 surround system in the choir room, also for spillover and so they can show films... a far cry from the typical church movie night with 16mm projector and crappy speaker!

Wow... that's really sompting (sorry; couldn't resist). It is kind of silly to be putting a PA in a room that is so acoustically beautiful... those old-time designers and builders usually did a great job of providing warm, articulate sound with nothing but their ears and common sense- and of course the priests and choirs knew how to project back then!  But the recording side of things will really improve their ability to document weddings, baptisms, etc.
