Randoms from NYC part 2

Postby beaky » Fri Oct 14, 2005 6:18 pm

Forgot Wash. St. doesn't continue directly across Canal St., so I'm forced over to West St., but surprise, idiot, you can't turn south there... sigh. But really, who cares? I've got all day for this; I can blame the horrific Friday traffic for any delay. And look- there's a ventilation tower for the Holland Tunnel... very impressive.

Finally properly turned around... the worst is up ahead, as I try to maneuver to the corner of Rector and Washington, amongst the crazy jumble of narrow streets that outlines the oldest part of the city. Here we pass the World Trade Center on West St.; nice look at the lovely Woolworth Building, a very early skyscraper.

Turning onto Broadway... now how do I get to  Rector again? Usually navigate these one-way streets on foot... ergh; damn tourist bus... yeah, yeah, it's St. Paul's, who cares...

Amazingly, I manage to park for free on the street just around the corner, and it takes all of 5 minutes to go upstairs and get the stupid drawings. Now to get back to Mt. Vernon... ugh.

The traffic is now just brutal. Friday rush hour in Manhattan, especially with a nice weekend forecast, starts pretty much just after lunch. But my immobility affords a great photo op: This is a trapeze school, right on the Hudson River, by West St. I think this is actually a nice photograph (you should see it in full res. and uncropped).... she actually did pretty well, swinging out , hanging upside down, then letting a guy on another trapeze grab her in mid-air. I have to try that sometime...

Nice to see. I was in NYC a few weeks ago and drove along with that Gray Line bus.  :D When I see these shots, I know I miss New York...it's an amazing city everyone must visit at least once!

Amazing shots Rottydaddy! Not often we get to see real life shots from the big apple! Somehow this makes the city more 'real' to me. It's just so different from movies, documentaries, etc. where they seem to use some special camera's that give the pictures that hollywood look.

On count of the skyscrapers, I must say i really like the old style scrapers like that woolworth building or the empire state building.

There are loads of gorgeous old buildings in NYC- not all of them very tall, either.
But I agree, the bigger ones are much prettier than their contemporary rivals, although some of those are pretty nice, too.
A lot of it has to do with the materials used on the exteriors: granite, copper, stainless steel, and terra cotta (the WW bldg. is clad all over in terra cotta), as opposed to just steel and glass...

Great shots!!  This is great.  I visited NYC and London through the eyes of real people and never left my
house.  NYC is only about an hour and a half from me but, never have the time to visit it.
Thank you, Guys
