NAS Oceana Airshow 2005 (Practice Day)

Postby Silver1SWA » Fri Sep 23, 2005 2:11 am

Well, here we go guys.  I'm finally attempting to post my shots from the Oceana Airshow last week.  This airshow featured the last F-14 Tomcat tactical demo ever.  The Navy has retired them and at the time of the airshow, there were 8 F-14s flying in the continental US and all 8 were at this show.  Since then, all 8 have been retired.  So sad...

Anyway, here is some pics from the Friday September 16th.  This was practice day.  The area was hit by Hurricane Ophelia the day before so the weather still kinda sucked.  These pics aren't the greatest of the bunch due to poor lighting.  This will be the first of many threads over the next few days so please check back!

Man of these pics are purposely not cropped to give you an idea how close they were.  I wanted to leave some environmental objects in the shot to give you an idea of the perspective.

This was the spot that day.  Many people came out to catch the practice.  This spot was perfect expecially for the Blue Angels.  I actually liked it better than standing near show centre as this spot gets you so much close to them and they fly directly overhead at very low altitudes when looping around to head back towards the center of the airfield.

Notice the swirls coming from the props as it takes off overhead.  Shortly after this it looped around and buzzed us at very high speed just feet above the trees.  No one saw it coming...so yeah didn't react fast enough for a picture.  I have a shot from the airshow the following day showing the same pass I'm talking about.  You will see how low it was over the trees...

See what I mean??

Nice pics. Shame about the F-14 retiring, as I've never even seen one! I don't think the late 90's/early 2000's was the best time for F-14s making appearances in England  ::)

Never gone to see a rehearsal... very interesting. Must've been a bear for them, working with that lousy vis. Yuck.
