Very interesting Paul. That looks like quite a large airfield. Possibly ex-RAF. Any idea of the history?

Hi Doug...!

http://www.aeroclub.co.uk

The airfield was used during WW II for gliders taking troops to France.
I often saw the gliders being towed up in the sky during 1942 and 1945.
I remember visiting it just after the war, in it's original form, before some of the present buildings were there.

A lovely airfield only spoilt by the usual paranoia regarding 3rd. party insurance liability....meaning lots of barriers preventing close-up examination, photo's, etc, of the aircraft...even the Hangar is now out-of-bounds to the general public due to theft from the aircraft parked in there..particularly hand-held GPS units on Microlights.....!
Someone has always got to spoil it for everyone else...!

Cheers Doug...!

P.S. I did a Google search for "Shobdon War-Time photo's, activities, etc".....lots of pages...

Thanks Paul. I tried a quick search but didn't find anything.

Indeed. I once found our hangar at Shoreham full up with thieves (no other word for it) armed with screwdrivers removing the instruments from serviceable aircraft. This was during an air show back in the early 60s. >:( You should try to visit Popham some time before it's spoiled in the same way. http://www.popham-airfield.co.uk

PS. Looks like those buildings & hangar doors could do with a coat of paint. You could pack a wire brush next time you visit & volunteer to do it. They might let you have a closer look. ;)
