More Airplanes w/No Apologies (Old Rhinebeck Pt.1)

Postby beaky » Tue Jan 04, 2005 11:02 pm

Some scanned old prints for the WWI buffs, taken at one of the greatest  air museums in the world...

There are better pictures on the ORA website, but these are mine!! Most are poor quality, but some of the worst ones capture some great moments. Not many in-flight pix... at the time, I didn't have a decent lens. Hope you vintage buffs enjoy...
The flight line- this place is like a time capsule. Something about the air... carnival food, grass, and- burning castor oil...Image
A lovely Spad and, I believe... a Camel. Feel free to correct me on that one. Most of these crates are replicas (most very old in their own right- 40+ yrs.), but most of the engines are originals, lovingly coaxed back to life every weekend from May to October. Nothing like the sound of an old rotary!
Image
Meet the Fokkers... D5 and D3. They're great in flight, but wonderful on the ground, too. So damn ... jaunty. And yet wicked-looking. Love 'em.
   Image
Another shot of the D5, with a very old Indian 4 motorcycle. ORA has a number of amazing old bikes, cars, tanks, and trucks that still putter around to everyone's delight.

Image
      A magnificently filthy Avro trainer!

More to come...

Very nice Rottydaddy. You're obviously a man after my own heart. Old Rhinebeck is one of those special places with a wonderful atmosphere. ;)

It took a little detective work but I tracked down your missing photo. D5 , Indian 4.jpg might be original but it's not the most suitable file name I've seen. ;)

Here's another tip. Save or rename your images without spaces in the file names before uploading them. You can use a dash or underscore in place of a space if you wish. This would be a better name for your image. D5_Indian-4.jpg

I give all my own images my own da- prefix before uploading them here just in case someone else used the same file name. For example, an image with the name 737.jpg would stand every chance of overwriting someone else's shot. You might be surprised at how many people use file names like this when they first start posting images.

I don't care what they say, Hagar- you're really not so horrible! Yes, it's an idiotic filename- I meant to change it, but in my haste, etc.  Glad you like the pics- I'll be posting more soon.  I take it you've been to ORA?

Too bad they weren't flying that day, but what the heck- it's worth the price of admission just to wander around there. Not sure when you were there, but  a few years back they "went legit" and built a shiny new museum hangar in addition to the funky old barns (not that I minded the funky old barns- every time I go in there, I see something in a corner that I missed last time). They've also got a second New Standard now, which shortens the wait for a ride (it's really too bad you missed taking a ride in the New Standard!). I've heard a lot about Old Warden, and it's definitely on my list should I find myself in the UK. BTW, it's Penn as in Pennsylvania Station... it's at 33rd between 7th and 8th Avenues, not Penn Street (that error could lead to a very expensive, confusing cab ride- LOL!) Next time you're here, you should check out the USS Intrepid museum- she's moored at the piers on the West Side near Times Square, and loaded with aircraft, etc. The submarine Growler is next door, and I haven't gone to see it yet, but a Concorde on a barge was recently added to the neighborhood. I've got a few pics from the Intrepid that I'll be posting later. Teterboro Airport also has a small but interesting museum (short bus ride from the Port Authority station at 42nd St.), and I think they still allow visitors in the old control tower. One can sit up there with a view of the whole field and listen to the radio chatter. ..

I don't think I've seen your OW pics, but I'll look for them. I'm currently cooking up a fresh batch of photos to post, so stand by (would've been done sooner, but came home after an afternoon troubleshooting a control system at work to find one of the home routers offline- second time in 2 days!!).  >:( That wasted some precious time, what with the call to New Delhi and all. ;)
