The first shot is a Soko Galeb.
The second shot is a Stearman.

The smarter guys on these boards will probably have more info on the two.

You're right Clap.. That does look like a Galeb, but those were 60's Russian trainers... why is it in USAF markings? Unless it was restored... And yes the second one definetly is a Stearman.. Looks like a pre-WWII model.

Nice pics anyway. Try to upload some to airliners.net... Could work.

I wondered that myself. The Galeb (Seagull) is Yugoslavian . When the country was split in the recent bitter civil war the single-seat version (J-1 Jastreb "Hawk") was used in combat by the Serbian Air Force. I was reading that some found their way on to the US warbird circuit. It's possible this one was painted in these markings for film or display work.

That could be. I see a lot of old MiGs around here (70's era) repainted in USAF colors... Strange why they do it. I'd just leave it it's original colors.

great mix of pics. As for why they dont leave it in the original markings. It generally avoids confusion should a young trigger happy pilot see it and thinks its the enemy. Or at least thats what they did in WW2 when the British captured the german planes and tested them round farnborough. Amazing how the residents also kept quiet about the RAF marked german planes.

There's warbirds painted with big black crosses flying all over the place & as far as I know nobody takes potshots at them. I suspect there's a more practical reason. The Galeb is apparently economical to operate & would make a nice generic jet for a film. Some directors & Joe Public aren't too fussy about authenticity. I was also reading that aircraft in former Eastern Bloc markings are relegated to their own section at some air displays in the US & not allowed to display. Maybe the owner wants to show off his pride & joy - & why not?
