I think this is a fairly recent phenomenon. Digital editing is common now & almost anyone can do it with the right software a certain amount of practice. In the old days of conventional photography they said the camera never lied although it could & very often did. Now, if someone posts a photo of anything unusual everybody immediately shouts out "It's a fake" even if it isn't. That's my theory & I'm sticking to it. ;)
