My recent short vacation pics

Postby SaVas » Fri May 14, 2004 1:43 pm

I went on vacation to Tawas City, Michigan, which is about 10 and a half hours away. I had never seen the Great Lakes so I was ready for an adventure over a long weekend.

I love lighthouses, and find them my favorite type of architecture. All the history behind them...

Tawas Point Lighthouse, Tawas City Michigan:

About 30 minutes north along Lake Huron, I found another lighthouse. This time, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse

Onsite they had an old fishing boat called the Bernice D. There was a plaque on it that said:

"The Bernice D"

Built 1915; Peshtigo, WI; Length 30' 5"; Width 9'2"; Depth 3' 6"; 9 Gross tons; Official # 215202; Last recorded use in 1981; Sault St. Marie, MI

This is a gasoline powered fishing boat typical of many used on the Great Lakes in the first half of the 20th century fishing for lake trout, white fish, and other species was a major industry from the early 19th century until the sea lamprey, an ocean predator, which entered the Great Lakes in ships' ballast water decimated the fish population and wiped out commercial fishing on the lakes in the 1940's - 1950's

Here are a couple pics around Tawas City:

and here is something I thought was pretty darned neat. There is a sculptor in Tawas City that makes various recognisable sculptures. he even has a few scattered around on the beaches that I didnt get pictures of, but this is his yard:

And lastly, here is my cat lounging around on the window sill thrown in for added extra meaasure:

Hope you enjoyed. As you can see, it wasn't the best weather. On my last day there, May 2nd, it was snowing lol. First couple of days were nice though.
