Shoreham Beach

Just south of the airport is the road leading to an area known as Shoreham Beach. It's a strip of land across the other side of the river from Shoreham itself. The first buildings were ramshackle affairs & some were old railway carriages. Some of these still survive but you would never know. In the early days of the airport it was known as Bungalow Town. It's now a much sought-after area to live & several well-known celebrities have homes there.

This is the actual beach looking east towards Brighton. The harbour entrance with the new power station chimney shows clearly with Hove & Brighton beyond it. The cliffs in the distance were visible as far as Seven Sisters & Beachy Head (near the ship at far right) although they don't show in the photo. These are formed from the same white chalk as the famous White Cliffs of Dover.


West towards my home town. The rocks are sea defences. Worthing Pier is dead centre in the distance.


Just across the road from the beach these are some of the houses on the waterfront. This is part of the river & it's like a sheltered lake. Rather difficult to describe unless you've been there & I'm none too sure of the geography of it myself. I'm rather pleased with the way the shots turned out on a perfect morning. A delightful place but I couldn't afford to live here.  ::)





PS. Thanks Craig for asking about Shoreham Beach & giving me the idea of a visit. As you can see there's no sign of any construction work on this part of it.

My goodness Doug...all those large beautiful homes and I don't see many boats.

Is it because of the season...maybe to early yet?

That might explain it although they've been there a while now. The wooden breakwaters (or groynes) are getting old & falling apart. They're gradually being replaced with rocks along the whole of this part of the coast.

I don't know much about this area. Although I think it's part of the river & therefore fresh water. Access to the river "proper" might be restricted. There are a few small boats, more like dinghies, moored by some of the houses. They all back onto the water, so I imagine that some would have bigger boats there if possible. There are plenty of boats of all types in the main part of the river & the outer harbour area. The natural harbour is unusual in that it lies to the east* (where the chimney is in my photo) whereas the river exits to the sea from the west & forms part of the airport boundary. This part of it is like a tributary or small lake.

*Shoreham Harbour is actually in Portslade & not Shoreham at all. Shoreham Airport is in Lancing although it's run by Brighton, Hove & Worthing town councils. Life gets a tad complicated around here.
