For all I know only one helicopter was powered by an engine like that. But i've forgotten its name too. Either the Westland Whirlwind (if that ever was a helicopter) or the Westland Wessex (more probable).

I think it was the Wessex,the Whirlwind was twin-engined WW2 fighter.

I think it was the Wessex,the Whirlwind was twin-engined WW2 fighter.

The Westland version of the Sikorsky S-55 was also named the Whirlwind. It was powered by the Alvis Leonides engine.

I'm no expert on engines. The Beaver in shot #1 originally had the 450 hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior. I believe some versions were fitted with the Leonides.

Hi Hagar, you actually put the answer to the second engine one in one of the other posts:)

The only engine I've mentioned so far is the Lycoming flat four in the Auster. The ones in this thread are both 9 cylinder radials, I suspect either Alvis Leonides or Pratt & Whitney Wasp Junior. The Skeeter had an inline Gipsy Major.

well my dad thinks that was the one. The owner of said engine is in the last picture at the bottom of the screen on the left

No. The shot is of a radial engine, most likely the Alvis Leonides in the Westland S-55 Whirlwind. The Gipsy Major is a small 4 cylinder inverted inline engine like the one in the Chipmunk.

ok he admits he got it wrong, something about a sycamore and pratt and whitney wasp either way i am no mechanic or engine expert and well helicopters are all the same to me:)

OK. As I said, I don't know much about engines but I do know a Gypsy Major when I see one. We used to call them Dripsy Majors on account of all the oil they spewed out. ;)

The Mark 2 Sycamore used by the British Army had the Alvis Leonides.
