My local harbour 2

Postby Hagar » Thu Nov 27, 2003 8:06 pm

The harbour entrance with an ocean-going tug heading back to base.
Image

Looking east into the inner harbour. We used to swim across here to the other side & back. Not sure we quite appreciated the danger. Sometimes I wonder how we survived.
Image

This is Shoreham Harbour proper taken from the lock gates. The inner harbour is actually in Southwick & Portslade. Confusing around here ain't it. ;)
The big chimney is the new Portslade power station. The old one was twice the size with 2 chimneys & was a prominent landmark for many years.

A tug coming into dry dock for maintenance. It's a tight fit.

Now I know why they call it a rust-bucket.

Hagar  You're a mean, mean man.  First you make poor Ozzy homesick, and now you've made me homesick, and I've never been there. Realy love the pictures, and the stories.  Strange thing though, when the family used to get together and show pictures, it seemed boring, but now, looking at yours seems quite enjoyable. Thanks

I hope you continue to get fitter, because the fitter you are, the more pics you take.  The more pics you take, the more you can post. The more pic you post, the more I  see. The more I see, the happier I get.  D-mn, never would have thought I would be so glad to see an Englisman get fit.  Who'da thunk it?

Thanks Fido. That's all the encouragement I need. If I can make just a few people like you happy, make Pippin want to visit my country & poor old Ozzy just plain homesick I feel my humble efforts are worthwhile. :D

I often drive past places like the harbour without giving it a second glance. I realised today that it must be something like 30 years since I last strolled over those lock gates.

I reckon I can just squeeze this one in. It's the old Brighton 'B' power station (first commissioned in the early '50s) that stood on the site of the new one in my photos.
Image
It might have been less efficient than the modern one but was an ideal landmark for Shoreham Airport as the white smoke belching from the chimneys also told you the wind direction. http://www.yeoldesussexpages.co.uk/misc/power/swickps1.htm
It was also a fine piece of architecture.

Too bad they couldn't have retro-fitted the old structure. Now that looked like a power station, the new one just looks like a big metal box with a smokestack next to it.
