Early morning

I am most definitely not a morning person, especially not this early.....If it is before 09:00 and you don't see me with a cup of coffee in my hand......back away very slowly.......However sometimes it is worth being up that early......

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.

There's a special kind of silence, that time of day...Night sounds are gone, day sounds haven't started yet, it's like for a few minutes, the world is holding it's breath waiting to see what will happen today...

Dawn was my favorite time of the day when I was aboard ship. The first launch was usually around 0715 or so and we (the squadron maintenance flight deck crews) manned up about 0630 to check the birds over and power up the avionics and INS nav systems. Once we had the power cords plugged in, power on and everything humming along (hopefully) we waited for the flight crews to show up for preflight. Normally we'd get about 15 - 20 minutes to chill before they arrived. I usually brought a cup of coffee with me and I would pop the overhead hatch and sit on top of the aircraft (an E-2C Hawkeye). There I'd sip my coffee, monitor the INS alignment and enjoy the sunrise over a deep blue sea. Always a beautiful sight after a long night fixing broke airplanes. No prettier sight in the world than a sunrise at sea. Well...second place to a pretty girl that is.

An Aircraft Mechanic only needs two tools, Duct Tape and WD40.
If it moves and it's not supposed to - use the Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and it's supposed to - use the WD40.

Sorry Doug, but if I was sat up on the aircraft next to you whilst you enjoyed the sunrise I would vommiting down the side of the aircraft.......me and boats are not a good mix.

No sweat Matt! An aircraft carrier rides smooth and steady most of the time; like cruising down the autobahn. Though I had been in one tropical storm where we had waves breaking over the flight deck on the Eisenhower. (The deck is normally 65 to 70 feet off the water!) I used to tease the guys on the replenishment ships that would come along side to bring our food and supplies. I would stand up in the catwalk and balance my coffee cup on the angle iron stanchion where they could see it as they were rocking back and forth and bobbing up and down. They usually spotted it and would point it out to their shipmates. Yep, ain't nothing like riding the Big Boat. :lol:
