To be honest I don't know. During WWII a RAF pilot above the rank of Squadron Leader would usually be flying a desk.

It's not always the case but the VC is generally awarded posthumously so you would have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Promotion tends to be rapid in wartime for obvious reasons. Many of these positions were temporary & known as "Acting" ranks. More commonly known as unpaid & unwanted.
