Quote: This is in stark contrast to Micro$oft, headed by multi-billionaire Bill Gate$, which is so greedy for your money that they have designed their latest operating system (Windows XP) so that after you purchase it you can not even use it on a second computer in your own home. In other words, if you also want to put XP on your laptop or on another computer in your house then you must go out and buy another copy of it....$100 for the upgrade or $200 for the full install.

This is not true. If you want to use your XP on a second computer, call Microsoft and explain this and after giving them your reg #, they will give you a key to enable you to install it again on another pc.

Actually "Ward Cleaver" is quite correct about this.
When a copy of Windows XP is purchased and installed on a computer it must be "activated" before it will function. It is activated over the internet...or by telephone.
Activation is a form of copy protection, in which each copy of XP must be "turned on" by registering it with Microsoft. The copy of Windows XP is then uniquely associated with a particular computer.
Once it has been activated and taken a so-called "snapshot" of your computer, there is nothing you can do (nor will MS give you a "key") to get that copy of XP onto another computer. It is from then on associated with the computer that it is installed on.
If you want XP on another computer in your house then you must go out and purchase another copy of it. Microsoft readily acknowledges this.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about in this area.

Ben I'm afraid Gumby is right on this, as we have XP on my machine at home, and on my wifes laptop. I've done this, so he is correct.

Sorry

Yup - I have the same XP on my 3 machines. All registered - all update regularly & only one single user purchase.

It's really revved up an old machine of mine too :)
