CFS1 - The best of the Bunch

Postby Smoke2much » Sun Jan 19, 2003 8:18 pm

I have to say that in my Humble ( ;D) Opinion CFS1 is the best of the three.

My Dad was born in 1933 in Kent and the Battle of Britain took place literally above his head.  I was brought up hearing stories about hoping the Germans would come over during maths lessons lol.

He also talks about the V-1 campaign and the RAF technique of "tipping" them to force an early crash to protect London.  My Dad lost his best friend because of this and he has always felt a little bitter.

Nowadays I am a Nurse and I get to meet some amazing people.  The other day I met an elderly gentleman who flew Spitfires and P51's with a Polish squadron.  I sat with him for quite some time asking questions.  He told me that flying the Spitfire was more fun and easier to fly but for sheer comfort the P51 won hands down.  Apparently the heating in his was so good that he used to fly escort missions at 15,000ft +  in his shirtsleeves!

I prefer CFS1 because I am English, I apologise to our American friends but the US Naval war in the pacific holds very little interest for me(CFS2).  In addition I do not find it that playable.  I don't like to warp to the target as it decreases realism, but flying 200 miles and then getting shot down in eight seconds is strangely annoying.

So there you have the ramblings of a bored nurse, working an endless nightshift with only sleeping patients to look after.

Let me know what you think.

Will ;D

Yo Smoke2much,
I still enjoy CFS1.  The 99 plane limit of CFS2 turned me off from the outset and it seems you need to be a computer tech. to get CFS3 up and running, even with a newer highend machine.
From what I've heard CFS1 is still the sim to fly online (I don't fly online), also the AI in CFS1 is much better than on CFS2.
And with third party addons, we Yanks, can fly Pacific campaigns!

Glad you enjoy it too!  I fly with the 83rd squadron in CFS1, a great bunch of blokes.  I have a huge respect for the US airmen that flew in the pacific.  (Not that I feel that you implied I don't.).

In the airwar over Europe a pilot was never far from land and should he bail out over enemy territory he would be reasonably well treated by the enemy.  I have heared some stories about bomber crews being treated somewhat poorly by both sides but fighter pilots may have been initially roughed up but, I believe, were usually fairly safe.

Things were hideously different in the pacific.  We all know of the Japanese treatment of POW's, if the pilot was lucky enough to be captured.  It is difficult to imagine searching for a carrier in the vast pacific ocean.  Flying a damaged 'plane with perhaps no radio and watching as the fuel gauge slowly dropped to zero knowing that the closest friendly land was 1000 miles away.  Grim

If you see _83_2Lt_Wilf online its me.  Happy flying.

Will ;D

Smoke2much,

I agree with you about CFS #1.
My recollections of the War are vague, mainly newspaper accounts, ration books and v-mail from relatives overseas.
I've always been fascinated by the Battle of Britain and when my son-in-law gave me CFS for a birthday present three years ago, I was hooked.
I do have CFS2 but just can't get interested in it.
As long as there are authors adding new missions, scenery and aircraft to the game, I'll stick with #1.

Hi Smoke2much,
Well, you better cut down then!  ( I knew you were a Monty Python fan!)  I too agree that CFS1 is brill!  I am an ex-pat and bought the game as I wanted to fly RAF.  I haven't even tried being the Jerry or Yank!  The graphics are perfectly fine for me and the amount of downloads available are stupendous!

Have you tried the Pilot's War series by Richard Steele?  The are absolutely fab!  I haven't tried 2 as it had no Brit stuff.  I got suckered in to buying 3 and am one of the people who can barely get it to work.  With CFS1 you just installed and away you went.  I've never had a problem with it.

I've tried multi-player on the zone but its only a shooting arcade.  Not my cuppa.

Hopefully people will still be interested in CFS1, and keep it going.

Cheers mate!

Thanks guys for your response.  Er, Watley's Red Barrel anyone?

Can Snappa, try joining one of the CFS squadrons, I'm a member of the 83rd, it makes the Zone way way better.

Hi all

Nice to see how some people are still stuck with CFS1 ! That's my case so I just drop a line to "advertise" about my own Sqdn "FAFL342" at :
http://mapage.noos.fr/laurentpenot
We mostly fly the Douglas A20 "havoc" or "Boston", on the Zone or IP games ; we are honorable virtual pilots with respect of real flying and any honest fellow pilots out there... No dogfights for us : only cooperative missions over Europe and North Africa where all pilots skills are required : intercept, escort, bombing, straffing...

Salutations
Laurent "FAFL342 Larry" No342 sqdn WingCo.
